David Crystal: King of Editors

February 7th, 2010

Here at My Blue Pencil, we’re big fans of English guru David Crystal. Not only is he the Vice President of the Society for Editors and Proofreaders (our professional body) and a prolific author and all-round English expert, but he has a very progressive and generous attitude to language, with none of the snobbery and closed-mindedness that can overcome some people in their attitudes to grammar.

He has a fascinating blog which can be found here and most of his books are available on Amazon.

The New Literacy

February 1st, 2010

This article by Clive Thompson in the US version of Wired Magazine really inspires us.  He acknowledges that language is always evolving and that clear communication is not a simple question of right and wrong.  As editors who use the web every day, all the team here at My Blue Pencil know that the Internet does not mean writing standards are slipping, just changing.  As new technology revolutionises the way we interact with the written word – and we will be hearing plenty about that with the imminent launch of the iPad – the rules change.  That excites us and we hope it excites you too!
